Department of Foreign Languages

About the Department

DPU Foreign Languages Department was founded as a unit of Rectorate and became School of Foreign Languages with the decision of council of ministers published in Official Gazette of the Republic of Turkey on May 6th, 2012. Department of Basic English and Department of Modern English were active within SFL (School of Foreign Languages). Later, the two departments were merged under the Department of Foreign Languages.

Department of Foreign Languages offers compulsory and optional Preparatory classes for all the students of DPU. Preparatory Classes are compulsory for the registered students of the departments below.

Faculty of Arts and Sciences

  • English Language and Literature

Faculty of Education

  • Primary Mathematics Education ( 30% English medium instruction)

School of Foreign Languages

  • Translation and Interpretation- English

The students of the other departments may have Preparatory education upon their will within the quota predetermined by the SFL for each department.

The preparatory students take the placement exam at the beginning of the academic year and start their education of the suitable module and are expected to reach the targeted level.

By the years 2014-2015, the department had approximately 1000 students in the SFL building. In the academic year of 2020-2021 the number of the Prep Class students is 594. The classes are held by the instructors and contracted foreign instructors.

Department of Foreign Languages also provides undergraduate and graduate students of DPU with compulsory, elective and professional English language classes. Also, it offers distance learning and other foreign languages classes.

Elective second foreign language class are offered for the students at some faculties and colleges by the Department of Foreign Languages. The department provides German, French and Russian classes besides English for professionally well prepared and more qualified graduates.
